Ground-mounted solar
When the roof faces north, sits in shade, or has slates you’d rather not disturb, panels on a frame in the garden or a field keep every panel in full sun.
When it’s the better answer
- North-facing or heavily shaded roofs.
- Older or fragile roofs, or a protected structure.
- Farms and yards with space and a big daytime load.
- No load on the roof, and easy to reach for cleaning and upkeep.
Planning
At a house, ground-mounted panels are exempt from planning up to 25 m², if they’re behind the front of the house, no more than 2.5 m high, and leave at least 25 m² of garden. Larger arrays, farms and anything unusual are checked at the survey.
Price
It depends on the size, the frame and the trench back to the house, so we price ground-mounts after a quick free survey. The SEAI grants are the same as for a roof.
